Thlog 5: Lessons From Sublime

After walking into class on Wednesday and hearing Sublime play, I knew I had chosen the right teacher for writing two. Zack, you’re awesome because you teach us concepts in ways that we enjoy which makes it much more interesting and easy to learn. At the beginning of the week I was having some trouble getting a grasp of what a “move” was, as I had missed the lesson on moves on Monday. I didn’t really see the difference between a move and a convention. However, the activity where we had to find the moves in Sublime’s song was super helpful (and fun) in showing me exactly what a move was. When you relate learning to something as awesome as music, specifically sublime, I feel way more involved and eager to understand the concept. What I took away from that activity is that moves are specific choices that a creator makes to make a certain impression on the readers/listeners/etc. Moves are different conventions because conventions are applicable to an entire genre, while moves seem more specific to one piece. Moves are things that the author adds to their specific piece in order to accomplish something. Of course, moves can be copied by other people, like other reggae artists trying to copy Sublime’s. I think knowing about moves will be useful in Writing 2 because we will be able to develop our own moves and create our own style and add a personal touch to our writing. Moves could also be useful in the sense that we can look at and replicate other people’s moves that we like and think could be beneficial to our writing. Moves seem like an awesome way to put my own spin on my papers and make them a little more interesting. I can’t wait to develop my own!
